Backstory: How I Almost Lost My Business Because of Bad Accountants
My name is Leith Khanafseh, and yes… that photo above really does capture the moment I realized my accountant had completely mismanaged my finances and never filed my taxes.
It was brutal. But let me tell you how I got here.
I’m actually a CPA myself, but early in my career, I fell in love with entrepreneurship. Using the income from my full time job, I started launching small ventures. Before long, I was juggling multiple businesses and a handful of real estate investments.
Everything seemed to be going great… or so I thought.
Then one day, I opened a letter from the IRS.
A very scary one.
And I only found out because the IRS told me.
So I did what any business owner would do: I went hunting for a new accountant.
I asked friends, peers, founders, investors — anyone.
But the answers were all the same:
“My accountant is… fine.”
“They’re good enough.”
“I don’t love them, but they get the job done.”
I interviewed dozens of CPAs and accountants.
Every conversation felt generic, impersonal, surface-level like they had one script for every client.
No one took the time to understand my actual situation: my businesses, my investments, my risk, my goals, my vision.
And that’s when it hit me:
This problem wasn’t unique to me.
